| Waqar Younis Career Waqar made his debut for Pakistan against India on November 15, 1989. He made an immediate impression with his pace, and became known in the media as the "Burewala Express".[1] Later, along with Wasim Akram, Waqar opened bowling regularly for Pakistan, becoming a feared and potent attack. His most recognized delivery was an in-swinging yorker. At his peak, he developed into a devastaing bowler towards the closing stages of the one day game, famously taking a hat-trick against South Africa in 1992. Waqar holds the record for the best strike rate among bowlers with 200 or more Test wickets. During the late 90s, he stayed out of the team for quite a long time allegedly due to conflicts with once bowling partner and captain Wasim Akram. His comeback came with him being appointed the Captain of the national side - a position he held till his side failed to make an impact in the 2003 World Cup. He retired after the Pakistan Cricket Board persistently ignored him for national selection. In March, 2006 he was appointed as the bowling coach for Pakistan.[4] He resigned from this position on January 6, 2007 in protest against the PCB's decision to retain him only for the Test series against South Africa and not for the subsequent series of five ODIs.[5] ![]() To be continoue

| Waqar Younis Masters of Reverse Swing Waqar is one of a long line of Pakistanis, starting with Sarfraz Nawaz, who have been effective at using the art of reverse swing. In partnership with Wasim Akram, Waqar spearheaded the Pakistan bowling attack in the early to mid 90's. Many attribute Waqar and Wasim to be one of the most effective fast bowling partnerships in the 1990s, due to their ability to swing the ball at high pace. The ability to reverse swing and his explosive speed lead to him becoming one of the most talented fast bowlers in modern cricket. Waqar explained his ability to reverse swing by the manipulation of an old ball; with one side shiny, one side rough, the ball would move in the opposite direction to conventional swing. This led to Waqar having the ability to swing the ball both ways, and in effect both Wasim and Waqar became successful in taking wickets by this variation of swing bowling. He was also effective in the use of short bowling; Waqar's bowling against South Africa in Sheikhupura, Pakistan, is remembered for his effective use of the short-pitched delivery. Following their 1992 series versus England, the English media, were suspicious of the then unknown art of reverse swing. This led to cries of foul play and allegations of ball-tampering from some quarters. Despite his undoubted qualities as a fast bowler, some believe he can be expensive at times, and sometimes lacked the consistency of bowlers, such as Curtly Ambrose or Glenn McGrath. This may be partly due to the mentality of his former captain, Imran Khan, where wickets were seen as top priority over economy. ![]() (To be continoue)

| Waqar Younis International Records Waqar is the only bowler to have taken 5 wicket hauls in 3 consecutive ODIs. He has taken 4+ wickets on 27 occasions in ODIs, also a record. In terms of balls bowled, he has taken the fastest 50, 300, 350 and 400 wickets in ODI matches and the fastest 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 wickets in Test matches. Although primarily a bowler, Waqar scored 1010 Test runs. As of September 2005, Waqar was the only man to pass the thousand run mark without ever scoring a fifty. Recently, he has become a television cricket commentator for Australia's Nine Network. From March 2006 to January 2007, he served as the bowling coach for Pakistan, but quit after only being asked to coach the squad during the course of the test series against South Africa and not the ODIs Controversies In 1989 home series against India, he became involved in an incident with the Indian captain, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who was given out lbw by the umpire off Waqar. Srikkanth appeared unhappy with the decision, and reluctantly walked towards the pavilion. Imran Khan, the then Pakistani captain, invited Srikkanth back to the crease, only to be caught behind off Waqar on the very next delivery. In July 2000 Waqar was suspended for one game after being found guilty of ball-tampering during the Singer Cup one-day series in Sri Lanka. Waqar, was the first player to be banned for the offence, and was fined 50% of his match fee for lifting the seam off the ball during a game against South Africa in Colombo ![]() To be continoue

| Waqar Younis Some Previous News About Waqar Waqar Younis appointed bowling coach Cricinfo staff March 8, 2006 Waqar Younis, the former fast bowler, has been appointed the bowling coach of Pakistan while Zaheer Abbas, the former Pakistani batsman, is the team manager. Waqar's duties will include working with the Pakistan A, Under-19 and Academy teams. Waqar, 34, was known famously for his ability to reverse swing the ball at toe-crushing lengths and his lethal pairing with Wasim Akram was a prime reason for Pakistan's success in the nineties. With 789 international wickets, Waqar is second only to Akram in Pakistan's all-time wicket-takers. He captained Pakistan with little success - he was at the helm during a disastrous 2003 World Cup campaign - and lost the job to Rashid Latif thereafter. He announced his retirement in 2004 and has been a commentator since then. Abbas, a stylish batsman in his day, played 78 Tests and 62 one-day internationals, averaging 44.79 and 47.62 respectively. He also had much success playing for the English county side Gloucestershire, and after leaving the game he officiated in one Test and three one-day internationals in the 1993-94. Pakistan's next assignment is a two-Test and three one-day international tour of Sri Lanka beginning March 17 (To be continoue)

| Waqar Younis Some Previous news about Waqar Waqar resigns as bowling coach Cricinfo staff January 6, 2007 Waqar Younis has resigned from his position as bowling coach of the Pakistan side with immediate effect, as he was unhappy with the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) decision to retain him only for the Test series against South Africa and not the subsequent series of five ODIs. Waqar returned from performing Hajj in Saudi Arabia to Lahore and told Nasim Ashraf, the PCB chairman, of his decision, just days before the start of the tour. He was appointed to the position in March last year, before Pakistan's tour to Sri Lanka. Speaking to local TV channels, he criticised the board. "If I am not needed for the ODIs then I don't want to do the job. The board doesn't respect its ex-players properly." A PCB official confirmed the news, telling Cricinfo, "Waqar spoke to the chairman and told him he wanted to be appointed for the full tour." He added, "He offered to resign if he wasn't retained for the whole series and the chairman accepted." Another official made the ambiguous assertion to TV channels that this was a decision for the team management and the board could not get involved. Whether or not the reappointment of Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan legspinner, as assistant coach to Bob Woolmer is a factor is open to question. Last week, Mushtaq was reinstated for the entire tour to South Africa as well as the World Cup shortly after, barely three months after Nasim Ashraf removed him, days before the Champions Trophy. Waqar also expressed, as recently as September, an interest in a coaching position at New South Wales, Australia. The interest appears mutual, as Dave Gilbert, NSW's chief executive, has already said that he wants Waqar to replace Anthony Stuart, who has left to take charge of Wellington in New Zealand. Waqar responded at the time, "It would be great to work full-time in NSW. I am very much interested in the job. When I finish my contract with Pakistan I will speak to David [Gilbert]." That scenario would be an attractive one for Waqar, as it would provide him the opportunity to return to Australia, where he is otherwise based with his family. Speculation will almost certainly filter through over the next few days, but it is worth noting that the first time the PCB officially considered appointing Waqar as bowling coach, there also resulted considerable friction. Nearly two years ago as Pakistan prepared to tour India, Waqar was in negotiations with the board for the job. But it ended in considerable acrimony, Waqar walking away disgruntled at not being offered the long-term role he envisioned, the PCB instead insisting on a series appointment only. Waqar, 35, is one of Pakistan's most successful bowlers ever, famed for reverse swing and his partnership with Wasim Akram, and one of the prime reasons for Pakistan's success during the nineties. With 789 international wickets, Waqar is second only to Akram as Pakistan's leading all-time wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs. He was a less successful captain, overseeing a shambolic 3-0 series defeat to Australia in 2002-03 and a disastrous 2003 World Cup campaign. He was removed immediately after and announced his retirement in 2004 ------------------------------ xxxx ------------------------- xxxxx ---------------------- Next will be Nasir Jamsheed
