Pink balls set for one-day trials

The white ball used in one-day cricket could be replaced by a pink one if tests prove it is more durable.
A fluorescent ball could be adopted for one-day county cricket by 2009, and then across the international game.

The red ball lasts much longer, so the pink ball will not be used for Tests and four-day county games.

"It's about the quality of the ball and the fact the white one doesn't last 50 overs,"

‘Gilly’ received a very special 36th birthday present ahead of the second and final Test match against Sri Lanka in Hobart – he was voted by his peers as the nation’s greatest one-day international player of all time.

Every player who has represented Australia in ODIs was eligible to take part in the poll and Gilchrist earned 38% of the votes, ahead of Ricky Ponting on 19% and Steve Waugh on 14%. Gilchrist, who was also picked in Australia’s greatest ODI and Test XI in history, has considered hanging up the boots in the next 18 months or so.

The survey was a follow-up to the announcement of Australia's greatest ODI team in February. Here is the celebrated XI of the four-time World Cup winners:-

Australia's greatest ODI team: Adam Gilchrist (wk), Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting (vice-captain), Dean Jones, Steve Waugh (captain), Michael Bevan, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Dennis Lillee, Glenn McGrath, Greg Chappell (12th man).

Harbhajan included in Test squad for Pak series

BCCI selectors have chosen the Indian team for the first two-Tests of the three-match series at home against Pakistan. Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik have been included in the 14-man squad whereas Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan and Gautam Gambhir failed to find a place.

The first Test match between the arch rivals begins on November 22nd at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground in Delhi. The second and third Tests will be played in Kolkata and Bangalore respectively.

No place for Sehwag

Sehwag was in the running to earn a Test recall, primarily due to his astonishing record against Pakistan. The opener has amassed four scores of over 150 against the arch rivals – including two double-centuries and a triple-century. He has averaged over 90 in the nine Test matches against Pakistan.

India squad: Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (vice-captain, wicket-keeper), Anil Kumble (captain), Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartik.

LAHORE: Australia have cancelled their cricket tour to Pakistan over security fears, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Tuesday.

"I can confirm they have conveyed to us that they have cancelled the tour. We are disappointed and we are issuing a policy statement soon," PCB director operations Zakir Khan said.

The announcement came shortly after two blasts killed at least 20 people in the eastern city of Lahore, one of the venues where Australia would have played.

Australian players had expressed reservations over the security situation in Pakistan following a spate of suicide bombings.

In 2002 also a series that was scheduled for Pakistan was shifted to Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.

ISLAMABAD: The groups for this September's Champions Trophy in Pakistan have been announced by the ICC, and India, Pakistan and Australia have been seeded together.

Group A comprises of defending champion and top seed Australia along with India, Pakistan and the West Indies while Group B is made up of the winner of the inaugural event, South Africa, as well as New Zealand, Sri Lanka and England.

The groupings were made on the basis of teams' rankings in the ICC ODI Championship table on March 12, the agreed cut-off date.

It was decided in 2005 that from 2008 the tournament would only include the top eight one-day sides exactly six months before the start of the tournament. As a result, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, who are ranked ninth and tenth, miss out.

The two groups will be played on a round-robin format with the top two sides progressing to the semi-finals. The full tournament schedule and information regarding venues will be announced by the ICC in due course.

Group A Australia (1), India (4), Pakistan (5), West Indies (8)
Group B South Africa (2), New Zealand (3), Sri Lanka (6), England (7).

DHAKA: South Africa rode on an unbeaten half-century by Graeme Smith to thrash Bangladesh by seven wickets and become the top-ranked one-day side in the world here on Friday.

Smith hit three fours and three sixes in his 94-ball 68 as the visitors overhauled the target of 143 with nearly 16 overs to spare for a 3-0 whitewash.

South Africa, who were level with Australia on points at the top of the one-day rankings before the series, completed the feat with a clinical all-round display.

Smith, 27, also surpassed 5,000 runs in one-dayers after reaching the same mark during the South Africans' 2-0 win in the preceding two-Test series.

The Proteas' captain, who reached his 36th half-century with a four off left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, brought off the winning runs with a huge six over long on.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, slumped to their 14th one-day international defeat in a row, with their last win coming against South Africa in a World Cup super eight match last year.
Smith, declared man-of-the-series for collecting 199 runs from three games, said he was pleased to lead by example and ensure the team was well prepared ahead of a tough tour of India starting later this month.

"I have been around for a fair bit now so obviously the responsibility is on me with a few youngsters coming in the team.

"We have done it the hard way here on slightly under-prepared wickets. We have bowled, batted and fielded well. This has been a great preparation for the India tour," Smith said.
Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful cut a sorry figure in contrast.

"Our bowling was good but the batting left a lot to be desired -- we could not cross the 200-run mark in any of the three matches.

"The series has been a learning curve for the whole team and we will try to overcome the disappointments with a better show in the future."

South Africa were off to a cautious run chase, scoring their first 50 off 101 balls before Smith joined A.B. de Villiers (40) to put on a 79-run stand for the third wicket and steer the team to victory.

Earlier, man-of-the-match Albie Morkel picked a career-best 4-29 while off-spinner Johan Botha chipped in with 3-34 as the hosts were bowled out in 42.5 overs on a placid wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

None of the Bangladeshi batsmen showed the patience or temperament to stand up to a second-string South African bowling attack, throwing away their wickets recklessly.
Half the Bangladesh side were back in the pavilion for just 97 after Ashraful won the toss and elected to bat for the third time in a row.

Tamim Iqbal (eight) was unlucky to be adjudged caught behind off Morkel as TV replays showed the ball clipping the pad and not the bat.

Ashraful's woeful form continued, being caught at mid-on by Hamish Amla off Morkel for nine. The under-fire skipper finished the series with just 17 runs from three outings.

DUBAI: Controversial umpire Darrel Hair has been included in the ICC elite panel but he will not supervise any match of Pakistan.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had reinstated the elite panel status of Darrel Hair on previous day but it was not pointed out that whether he would supervise the matches involving Pakistan or not.

However, general manager ICC Dave Richardson said that the governing body of the ICC has decided that Darrel Hair would be kept away from umpiring those matches in which Pakistan would be involved.
