“The legendary Inzamam Ul Haq ”
Inzi, thy batting is to me, like those Nicean banks of yore, that gently o'er a perfumed sea, the weary, way worn wanderer bore, to his own native shore.
On desperate seas long wont to roam, Thy pristine whites, thy classic cover drive, Thy Naiad airs have brought me home, To the glory that was Greece, And the grandeur that was Rome.
Lo! In yon brilliant short-cover niche, how statue like I see thee stand, the agate bat within thy hand! Ah, Psyche, from the regions which Are Holy Land!
This brilliant poem was submitted by CB Fry , undoubtedly one of the millions of admirers of the enigmatic Inzamam Ul Haq .
Inzi, as he is affectionately known around the world, shed the excess kilos that many criticized him for his reluctance to run the quick singles. Although this could be attributed to his ability to hit the ball astoundingly late, he is a calm and much needed presence at the crease. Known to be on the list of the 10 most feared sportsmen in the world, it seems to be a fitting tribute to the Pakistani batsman who regularly gives bowlers many a sleepless night.
Currently the captain of Pakistan , he is a burly and powerful force and although he is not very expressive on the field, he lets his bat do the talking. He became the first Pakistani to score 10,000 runs in 2005 and besides being an extremely talented batsman and leader; he is also a very safe slip-catcher. His 25 Test centuries and 42 half centuries at an average of over 50 is enough to make him the most successful Pakistani cricketer in history. In 2001 against New Zealand , he made an astounding 38 boundaries with an incredible 9 sixes, only three short of the all time record held by fellow team mate Wasim Akram . That innings was the tenth highest in Test cricket by any batsman ever. He is now third in line to the cricket throne after Bradman and Ponting.
Amidst the turmoil of the earthquakes and the ever debatable topic of captaincy, Ul Haq seems set to stay as captain until at least the World Cup in 2007 where he will no doubt silence his critics and put in another superb batting performance.
Should he stay or should he go, Pakistani fans and cricketers alike will have been privileged to have either played with him or against him or even just to have watched his star presence over the years.
