London is to see in the New Year with a spectacular Olympic-themed firework display at midnight on December 31.
Up to 150,000 revellers are expected to line the banks of the River Thames to enjoy the 10-minute firework and laser display.
The event is being organised by Jack Morton Worldwide, the London-based company responsible for staging the opening and closing ceremonies of the Athens Olympic Games.
Tubes and buses will provide free transport throughout the night, and the central London Congestion Charge will be suspended on New Year's Eve.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, who has allocated a budget of £1.2m for the festivities, said: "I want Londoners to celebrate New Year's Eve in any way they wish and be able to get home safely.
"Jack Morton Worldwide, who staging the opening and closing ceremonies for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, are designing and producing this year's free fireworks display at the London Eye.
"This builds on last year's celebrations and is part of a wonderful season of things to do all over the capital throughout December and January.
"The display will be seen by tens of thousands of Londoners around the viewing area and be visible in other parts of the city."
Fireworks will be set off from barges on the Thames and spotlights will be attached to the London Eye, while the Shell Centre on the South Bank will provide a backdrop for an Olympic-themed projection.
