Transport

The Jinnah International Airport is located in Karachi. It is the largest and busiest airport of the country. It handles 10 million passengers a year. The airport also receives the largest number of foreign airlines, a total of 27 airlines fly to Jinnah International predominantly from the Middle East and South East Asia. All of Pakistan's airlines use Karachi as their Primary hub including Pakistan International Airlines, Aero Asia International, Airblue and Shaheen Air.

The city's old airport terminals are now used for Hajj flights, cargo facilities, and ceremonial visits from heads of state. U.S. Coalition forces used the old terminals for their logistic supply operations as well. The city also has two other airstrips used primarily by the armed forces.

Karachi has the largest shipping ports in Pakistan at the Port of Karachi and Port Qasim. These seaports have modern facilities and not only handle trade for Pakistan, but also serve as ports for Afghanistan and the land-locked Central Asian countries. Plans have been announced for new passenger facilities at Karachi Port.

Karachi is linked by rail to the rest of the country by the Pakistan Railways. The Karachi City Station and Karachi Cantonment Station are the city's two major railway stations. The railway system handles a large amount of freight to and from the Karachi port apart from providing passenger services to people travelling up country. Plans are underway to extend the intra-city railway system to play a part in the city's mass transit through Karachi Circular Railway system. Currently, primarily motorists and minibuses handle commuter traffic, but there are plans to construct a light-rail based mass transit system in the city to decongest the roads and provide quick service to commuters.

Real estate

Karachi is located in semi-arid coastal desert area with very limited agriculture land along the two small seasonal rivers, Lyari River and Malir River that pass through the city. Before independence, the area around Karachi had sparse Balochi nomadic and fishing population and most of the land was state owned. At the time of independence, Karachi was chosen as the first capital of Pakistan and the land area came under tight state control. According to the data prepared by the Master Plan and Environmental Control Unit of the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) in 1988, nearly 400,000 acres (1600 km²) of the 425,529 acres (1722 km²) that make up Karachi's metropolitan area is in some form of public ownership. Government of Sindh owns 137,687 acres (557 km²), KDA 124,676 acres (504.5 km²), Karachi Port Trust (KPT) 25,259 acres (102 km²), Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) 24,189 acres (98 km²), Army Cantonment Board 18,596 acres (75 km²), Pakistan Steel Mills 19,461 acres (79 km²), Defence Housing Society 16,567 acres (67 km²), Port Qasim 12,961 acres (52 km²), Government of Pakistan 4,051 acres (16 km²) and Pakistan Railways 3,119 acres (13 km²). In late 1990s the undeveloped land belonging to KDA was transferred to the Malir Development Authority (MDA) and Lyari Development Authority (LDA).[35] The Defence Housing Authority has purchased 12,000 acres (49 km²) of land from the Sindh government along the Super Highway and will build Phase II of Defence Housing Society.[36]

Challenges

As one of the most rapidly growing cities in the world, Karachi faces challenges that are central to many developing metropolises including overcrowding, traffic, pollution, poverty and street crimes.

The traffic and pollution is a major challenge for Karachi as it is for almost all the major cities in the world. The level of air pollution in Karachi is estimated to be 20 times higher than World Health Organization standards.[37] A number of new parks have been developed and new trees are being planted in the city to improve the environment and reduce the pollution.

Criminal negligence plagues the rapidly expanding infrastructure. There were floods reported in the city during the monsoon of 2007. The Northern Bypass bridge collapsed on 1st September 2007 after being inaugurated only one month back by President Pervez Musharraf.

Despite efforts, the crime rate is rising and car and cell phone snatching has become an everyday scene. Due to its negligible cultural activities, traffic congestions and high crime rate, Karachi has been ranked fourth among the least livable cities in a survey by The Economist

Sea Sides In Karachi



Heh. Well it's basically the same waters as Hawkesbay; a little further along.

You need to have a hut on the beach to see it. It's not open to public, which is probably why you never got to see it.

It has 3 beaches and an enclosed pool that connects to the sea but has no waves. The pool is nice but has too many large rocks underneath. The first bay is rocky and small - generally used by fishermen and for jeti-ski launches. This is connected to the pool.

The second bay is the main beach (in the pic); it's less than a 100 m wide and has two 40-ish feet cliffs enveloping it and extending about half a km into the sea. This is the main bay, where people swim, snorkel, surf, windsurf, bodyboard etc, depending on the season.

A little further along is the last bay; this is a 25 metre or so wide beach - great swells and murderous rocks on both sides. You can get yourself killed here so not many venture here, even in calm winters.

Sea View

Literally saying "Sea View" starts from McDonalds and goes towards Marina Club. Sea View Apartments run in a row with the shore. City govt. has fixed Power lights so the shore remains bright after sunset. Sea water is clean here relative to Clifton Beach and mostly families prefer it. In general Sea View could be experienced from a number of spots such as: Clifton Beach : This is the most visited as it is close to the city centre but it is quite polluted. It is located near Play Land and Park Towers. Latest: City District Goverment made a large park along the Clifton Beach which is more than a kilometre long. Development work on clifton beach is running very SPEEDY. French Beach: This is the finest beach in Karachi. The water is clean and the air is crisp. There are gorgeous rocks embedded in the ocean. The waves splashing against them is quite a lovely sight. Paradise Point : Right down the road from French Beach is Paradise Point, that sports a marvelous view of the ocean from a eroded hill. A great place to go for a mixture of beauty and excitement. But due to rockey waters swimming is not possible. This location is almost at the limit of the Sindh province. Hawks Bay : A wonderfully sunny and sandy beach. The water is clean and if you need a tan, it is the beach to go to. The huts allow total privacy and the view is magnificent. It is a non rocky area so it is the best beach to take the family. A must see in Karachi. Sandspit : Quite near Hawks bay, it is pretty much the same. A good place for turtle watching and a good view!! Completely unpolluted and positively beautiful. If you go at night there are turtles all over the place.

We have visited sea view first, apx 15 Km drive we are moving towards Clifton Beach....

A beautiful sunset on a beach; with exotic-named islands in the back ground - Oyster Islands; and one of the world highest jet fountain. Yes, this is Clifton Beach, Karachi! I have read in the newspaper and heard arguments against this wastage, but there were hundreds-thousand of people there to watch this and enjoy. The fountain opens around sunset (1800 hours to 2400), and is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Last year (2006) the fountain remained closed during the monsoon season, probably due to rough sea and high tides. The fountain is planned to be functional again by Sept 1. Best time to view this at sunset. The project is part of the City’s beautification program. It has been designed to enhance the beauty of the coastline, and cost is more than Rs 250 mio. The Fountain Jet throws water to a height of 500 feet, with a pressure of 25 to 30 bars, which is the highest Fountain Jet of the world. The fountain is illuminated with 18 floodlights. Its operation room has one generator of 35 KVA and two diesel engines of 835 KW each. You can also now take a boat ride to the fountain to view it upclose.

Directions

Clifton Beach is near Play Land & Park Towers, Sea View is also in Cliftton Area, All other points are on the other side of city.

Form BBQ tonight go straight towards the coastline. Turn right from the round about on the Marine drive, and drive till you reach the next roundabout. Park your car and head towards the coastline.

Couple of years ago Karachi faced its Exxon Valdez disaster when a Greek oil tanker, Tasmanian Spirit, ran aground and broke into two. The result was a disaster because it spewed all its cargo -oil, onto the beach. For several months, the beach was closed to the public, and even several residents evacuated. A massive cleanup operation was undertaken, and now the beach has reopened to the general public. Do not be scared of grayish/blackish sand - it was like that before the spill. In addition to the water, various restaurants and vendors catering to all are lined on the waterfront. If you do not want to go in the water, eat in these restaurants, there is always a monkey show around (see pictures). Also horses and camels are available for one to ride and enjoy the beach. And if you do not like the crowds, avoid visiting on weekends/local holidays, especially in the evening. To be continoue

Over the Arabian sea, watch the sun go down, and disappear. These sunsets can be observed from all beaches lining Karachi (Clifton, Sands pit, Hawksbay, Paradise point, etc). If in Karachi, head towards the sea, and behind Village restaurant there is an extension wall that takes you right up to the sea. You get a clear view of the ocean and the sun beyond it, and maybe some boats/ships crossing in front, giving a nice perspective. Avoid Sunday or holidays as this beach is crowded, unless you like being in crowds....

You want to feel like Lawrence of Arabia, or wants the rush or thrill of being the best rider in the Kentucky Derby, then head to Clifton beach/sea view beach front to fulfill your dreams. You can avail the facility of riding a camel or a horse at a nominal price. Negotiate the rates before climbing on these animals. Best place to do this activity is behind the McDonald, because on return you may want to get the sand out of your feet/hand. Washing facility is available at that corner. After the ride you can pig out at McDonalds or KFC or Pizza Hut. Whichever suits your appettite Negotiate the rates and distance they will travel with the horse/camel owner before you board/take a ride, as they will rip you off!

Lets move towards a very historical place in the center of Karachi. If person travel towards Karachi and they don't see the tomb of Quaid.. As per my personal opinion thier tour is useless

The monumental tomb of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, is situated on a natural plateau within a 53 hectare park in the city of Karachi. The approach to the mausoleum is a terraced and landscaped avenue emphasized by fifteen successive fountains. This leads to a platform measuring 75x75m and 4m high, with steps on three sides, which forms the base of the mausoleum. The edifice, square in plan with tapering walls, is surmounted by a dome rising to a height of 43m. Four pointed arches open into the mausoleum from each of the four façades. The interior space is an octagon with a ceremonial sarcophagus in the centre. The actual tomb is located in a subterranean chamber immediately underneath. All exteriors and interiors are finished with marble and the interior of the dome with stucco. The openings above the doorways are lattice work.
