| Punjab police attacked on geo office ISLAMABAD, March 16:2007 About two dozen personnel of the Punjab Police on Friday attacked and ransacked the offices of a private TV channel some 30 minutes before the conclusion of the Supreme Judicial Council proceedings against Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, apparently in an effort to stop the channel from airing live pictures of police action against protesting lawyers and activists of various political parties. The police action against Geo TV came minutes after the channel telecast footage of running battle between the police and protesters, captured from its cameras on the rooftop of the office building situated about 500 metres from the Supreme Court building where the protesters were trying to reach to welcome the ‘non-functional’ chief justice. | Nearly 10,000 reported killed by China quake Eyewitness: 'Floor was moving underneath me' (CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that has so far killed thousands of people in central China has left its mark on more than half of the vast nation. The 7.9-magnitude quake near Chengdu left workers evacuated from buildings in the capital Beijing -- almost 1300 miles (2100 kilometers) away -- while it was also felt in Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and Pakistan. "I've lived in Taipei and California and I've been through quakes before. This is the most I've ever felt," James McGregor, a business consultant who was inside the LG Towers in Beijing's business district, told The Associated Press. "The floor was moving underneath me." In Chengdu, the city closest to the quake's epicenter, water mains burst, mobile phone networks crashed and computer systems were crippled, AP reported. An expert told CNN the 7.9-magnitude quake at about 2:28 p.m. Monday (6:28 a.m. GMT) was the largest the region has seen "for over a generation." Residents as far as Chongqing -- about 200 miles from the epicenter in Sichuan Province -- spent the night outdoors, too afraid of aftershocks to sleep indoors. Local radio in Sichuan quoted disaster relief officials as saying a third of the buildings in Wenchuan collapsed from the quake and another third were seriously damaged.

| Mass motorway pile-up in Austria This motorway has seen previoues fatal accidents but nothing of this scale before. The crash involved at least 60 vehicles and has closed the highway in both directions. A big motorway pile-up in western Austria has left one person dead and 30 injured, police say. One person was killed and 30 injured, five seriously, when a snowstorm provoked a massive pile-up involving some 60 vehicles on a motorway in Austria, police said Tuesday. Although the police are unaware of what caused the accident, the highway was covered in snow at that time. According to reports from Austrian TV, it has been reported that some people were believed to be trapped in their vehicles with rescue efforts made difficult due to snowfall and wintry. A police spokesman said that low visibility caused by a major snowstorm was to blame for the accident. Helicopters attempted to land at the scene, but some had to abort the rescue mission because of the heavy snowfall.

![]() This has happened in Ranchore Lane (Line), Nishtar Road neighborhood, old city area of Karachi. It is reported that three robbers were caught by residents after attempted robbery. The mob, after severely beating the robbers, sprinkled petrol and burnt them alive. The police were present on the scene. However, the mob refused to handover the robbers, claiming they would be released for a bribe or could easily get bail. In one report, the mob requested police to kill the robbers on spot and on police’s refusal, burnt the robbers alive. They argued that this incident would teach other criminals a lesson. An ambulance volunteer claimed that the police was standing there unable to do anything and the other volunteers had to wait for 20 minutes before they could take the injured and dead to hospital. “The robbers were lying in a pile on the road and petrol was poured over them,” he said. The DSP claimed, however, that a police mobile unit on patrol reached the scene and came under fire from the robbers. Two of them died in the crossfire and the third, Babar, was critically injured, he maintained. “Hundreds of people surrounded the spot and wanted to burn the men alive and even tried to attack the police,” said the DSP. A private television channel representative claims that SHO Nasir Mehmood slapped him when he tried to record footage of the scene. However, the SHO said that the situation was quickly getting out of hand; with only five to six police officers, two men dead and the third critically injured, they had to push the media back to safety. An inquiry committee has been formed on the directives of Saddar Town SP Ameer Sheikh. “It is not the fault of the police, but we are compelled to apologize,” the DSP added. I wonder why and to whom the DSP is apologizing? Maybe the reason is that his police was unable to save the robbers. Apart from inefficiency of our police, this incident clearly indicates the mob-rage mentality we are all falling into. In absence of law and order, injustice prevails and public is forced into thinking that they have to take matters into their hands. A common perception is that in Pakistan laws are made for the weak. We have seen people burned alive during riots spreading after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination and then on April 09, 2008. The government should take heed from this and be wary of these frustrated people when they start marching towards the palaces. Our media should also act responsibly. Publishing photos of burning bodies can not be taken as freedom of expression. There has to be a fine line drawn somewhere and sensitization should not be done on the cost of moral and religious values.
