The Creed (Aqeedah) of Imaam Abu Ja’far At-Tahaawi Explained

Aqeedah Tahaawiyyah

The Aqeedah is the famous work of Imaam Abu Ja’far At-Tahaawi, the great Mujtahid Imaam and scholar in which represents the creed of the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah in relation to Allah Most High, His divine attributes, His books, His messengers, His angels, the Day of Judgment, destiny, and life after death.

This work, though small in size, is a basic text for all times, past, present and future. It lists comprehensively what all Muslims must know, believe and inwardly understand, and it has long been the most widely acclaimed, and indeed indispensable, reference work on Muslim beliefs.


The Importance of Studying this Science

The renowned Mufti Muhammad Ibn Adam Al-Kawthari (Welcome to Darul Iftaa) has explained the importance of studying the science of Aqeedah on many occasions, a few points from which have been noted below.

Aqeedah is the most important subject that could be studied. The early Ulamaa’ used to say, as the famous Arabic proverb goes:

اَهَمُّهَُ الْعَقَائِدُ ثُمَّ الْفُرُوْع تَصَوُّفٌ وَآلَةٌ بِها الشُّرُوْع

This means:

The most important subject is the science of Aqeedah (Islamic creed and Beliefs). Then comes Furoo' (this refers to Fiqh). This is why Aqeedah is also called Usool (the main foundation/ base). Without correct and sound belief, everything else a human does goes in vain. Thereafter is Tasawwuf, acting upon what you have learnt and purifying your soul.

All of these go hand in hand, and today we are fortunate to have many texts translated into English and to have courses that teach these under the guidance of expert Ulamaa’. Studying this subject will help a Muslim have the correct beliefs about Allah, the Prophets, the Books, the hereafter etc. It helps a Muslim have a deeper understanding about the fundamentals of Islam, aiding one to attain recognition of Allah. It makes us firm in religion, without which we would be extremely vulnerable. When we are vulnerable, it is very easy for others to corrupt our mind and beliefs.

It is essential to study Aqeedah. We do not study it to make Takfeer (call others disbelievers), to cause disputes, nor do we study this science for argumentation and causing friction, this is totally wrong. Insha’Allah by attending this course, you will be able to attain knowledge in a much neglected field.


The Course

A complete explanation of Imaam Tahaawi's entire text will be provided along with an introduction to Islamic theology, its history and development. The course shall be taught in two parts, over two weekends, Insha’Allah.

• Mufti Abdur-Rahman Ibn Yusuf will present these fundamentals of Muslim belief as a living and dynamic reality, providing the student with a well versed and clear explanation of this essential text from clear proofs in the Qur’an and authenticated teachings of our beloved Prophet .pbuh., as understood and practised by his illustrious Companions (radhiyallahu’anhum).

• An investigation and discussion about the various sects that have come about and their manifestations relating to essentials in Islamic faith will also be provided, enabling the learner to explore the differences between various ideologies.

• The student shall develop a greater and deeper understanding of Aqeedah, and an enhanced love for their Deen, Insha’Allah.


Teacher Mufti Abdur-Rahman Ibn Yusuf

Mufti Abdur-Rahman Ibn Yusuf has been studying traditional Islamic sciences and authoring scholarly works for many years. Training initially at Darul-Uloom Bury, UK, he memorised the Qur'an by the age of 15 and completed a six year Sharee’ah program. He graduated with certifications (Ijaaza) in numerous disciplines, including Arabic, Islamic jurisprudence and Hadeeth (with emphasis on the 6 authentic books of Hadeeth (Sihah-Sittah) & Muwattas of Imaam Maalik and Imaam Muhammad); his teachers include Shaykh Yusuf Motala.

In South Africa, he gained specialised training in answering legal questions (Ifta'), completed a B.A. with honors in Islamic Studies, before receiving a second certification in Qur'anic recitation in Syria from Shaykh 'Abd Al-Razzaq Al-Halabi (possessed an unbroken chain of transmission to the Prophet .pbuh. in this subject) and gained Ijaaza after reading Mulla 'Ali Al-Qari's Sharh Al-Fiqh Al-Akbar.

In India, the Shaykh received authorisation to issue legal rulings (Fatawa), after studying many classical jurisprudential texts, including, Ibn Nujaym's Al-Ashbah wa 'l-naza'ir and 'Allama Haskafi's Al-Durr al-mukhtar (along with its commentary, Radd al-Muhtar, by 'Allama Ibn 'Abidin al-Shami).

To date, Mufti Abdur-Rahman has written and translated many texts including Fiqh Al-Imam: Key Proofs in Hanafi Fiqh (1996), Reflections of Pearls (1995) & Imaam Abu Haneefah's Al-Fiqh Al-Akbar, along with its commentary.

He presently serves as Imaam of a southern California Masjid and continues to work on scholarly publications. Imaam Tahaawi

Imaam Abu Ja'far Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Salamah bin Salmah bin 'Abd al Malik bin Salmah bin Sulaim bin Sulaiman bin Jawab Azdi, popularly known as Imaam Tahaawi, after his birth-place in Egypt, is among the most outstanding authorities of the Islamic world on Hadeeth and Fiqh (jurisprudence). He lived 239-321 A.H., an epoch when both the direct and indirect disciples of the four Imaams: Imaam Abu Haneefah, Imaam Maalik, Imaam Shafi’ee and Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal - were teaching and practicing. This period was the zenith of Hadeeth and Fiqh studies, and Imaam Tahaawi studied with all the living authorities of the day. He began as a student of his maternal uncle, Isma'il bin Yahya Muzni. A leading disciple of Imaam Shafi’ee. Instinctively, however, Imam Tahaawi felt drawn to the corpus of Imaam Abu Haneefah's works. Indeed, he had seen his uncle and teacher turning to the works of Hanafi scholars to resolve thorny issues of Fiqh, drawing heavily on the writings of Imaam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani and Imam Abu Yusuf, who had codified Hanafi Fiqh. This led Imaam Tahaawi to devote his whole attention to studying the Hanafi works and he eventually joined the Hanafi school.
