Assistant coach Mushtaq Ahmed has been the first person to appear before the inquiry into Pakistan's failure during the World Cup.

The committee has been appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board to evaluate the reasons behind the side's early exit from the tournament.

A shock defeat at the hands of Ireland and a further loss to hosts West Indies meant that Pakistan was knocked out after just two matches.

Mushtaq attempted to deflect responsibility away from captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, who is due to appear before the inquiry on Thursday.

He said he had told the committee that there were many reasons for the defeat to Ireland and the captain should not be solely blamed for it.

Chairman of the inquiry committee Ejaz Butt said: "Mushtaq was very candid about the reasons for the team's performance and gave some useful insight into what had happened."

Committee member and former test player Saleem Altaf said that the inquiry was recording its proceedings, which will question players, team officials, board administrators and journalists.

He said: "We just want to be sure whatever is said before the committee is on record and helps us exactly in compiling our findings.

"But we are asking some hard and relevant questions hoping to learn from the mistakes so they are not made again."

The committee has been instructed to report its findings in 30 days.
